You have the chance for a new beginning at DVM.
Many options will be opened for you. After you begin treatment and adjust to taking a daily medication you will set your own goal. Many patients find that methadone treatment brings them a fully functioning and rewarding life. They use their time in counseling to deal with problems and stress that could cause them to relapse into drug abuse.
Gradual Dose Reduction
You may find yourself motivated to discontinue methadone/buprenorphine. While research has shown far more successful treatment outcomes for medicatioin-maintained individuals and that maintenance is usually the most-recommended treatment, some individuals have been successful in discontinuing their medication-assisted therapy. Tapering (gradually discontinuing methadone) is usually done over a long period of time to minimize withdrawal symptoms. Every person’s weaning-off schedule is different. Your counselor and the DVM medical staff can help you through this process and carefully monitor your progress. Abruptly stopping methadone maintenance is dangerous. It can cause severe withdrawal symptoms and often leads patients back to illicit drug use.
Successful Completion of Treatment
Whether you continue in methadone maintenance or gradually taper off, DVM will consider you to be successful in your treatment when:
- You are living free from all illicit drug use and abuse.
- You have made real improvements in your relationships with family and friends.
- You function better as a parent, worker, or caregiver.
- You are involved in other constructive activities, such as support groups, social activities, recreation, and hobbies.
